Travel Clinic

About travel clinics

Travel vaccinations and clinics are essential to planning for any trip abroad. Midway Pharmacy offers several services to ensure travellers are vaccinated against the illnesses they may encounter during their journey.

For those travelling within Europe, the NHS recommends that you ensure you’re up-to-date with routine vaccinations such as MMR, diphtheria, tetanus, and polio. Vaccines such as hepatitis A and B and meningitis ACWY may also be recommended depending on your destination. For certain countries outside of Europe, such as South Africa, vaccinations against yellow fever may be necessary.

Planning ahead

To receive these vaccinations, booking an appointment at a travel clinic such as Midway Pharmacy before departure is advisable. We provide expert advice on which vaccines are most suitable for your destination and can give advice on other safety precautions that should be taken when travelling abroad. It is also essential to know that some vaccines require injections over several weeks or months before departure, so it’s best to plan if possible.

Choosing a travel clinic

When choosing a travel clinic, it is essential to select one that provides quality care and up-to-date information about destinations worldwide. Be sure to check their services, including whether they offer trained healthcare professionals who can answer questions about prevention methods while travelling and how quickly they can provide any necessary vaccines or medications before departure. At Midway Pharmacy, we have trained travel specialists and offer a next-day service on most of our travel vaccinations.

Before the appointment

It is recommended that you bring along your passport and other documents relating to your trip when attending a travel clinic appointment. This ensures that medical professionals consider all relevant information regarding your journey when deciding which immunisations are necessary for you and that documentation regarding these vaccinations can easily be obtained from them once completed.

    • What services do travel clinics offer?

Travel clinics offer a variety of services that are tailored to the specific needs of travellers. These may include pre-travel consultations, vaccinations, and medications designed to treat or prevent illnesses associated with travel abroad. Services may also include immunisations for seasonal influenza and other serious diseases, including yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis. Additionally, travel clinics can answer questions about disease prevention for those travelling to developing countries and provide advice regarding how to protect oneself from vector-borne infections such as malaria or dengue fever.

    • How do vaccines work?

Vaccines work by introducing a weakened form of the virus into the body so it can learn to recognise it without actually making someone sick.

    • How long do travel vaccines last?

Once vaccinated, most vaccines last for several years or even decades before needing replenishment; however, others may need boosting more regularly.

    • Are travel vaccines free on the NHS?

Travellers should note that not all vaccines are free of charge on the NHS – some may have to be paid for at private clinics like Midway Pharmacy.

    • Do I need travel vaccines?

Vaccinations protect against potentially dangerous illnesses so having them before setting off helps ensure peace of mind when travelling abroad, allowing you to focus instead on making memories without worrying about coming home ill from your travels!

    • How much do travel vaccines cost?

The cost of vaccinations will vary depending on your choice, but some may be free of charge through the NHS. Midway Pharmacy also offers additional services such as malaria tablets or antimalarials if needed for your particular destination.

    • What is a travel clinic?

A travel clinic is a specialised medical facility that provides travellers with comprehensive health care and advice. It offers pre-travel assessment services, vaccinations, prescriptions, and post-travel follow-up care. Travel clinics are staffed by qualified healthcare professionals who understand the specific needs of international travellers. Travellers can also receive information on country-specific health risks, such as infectious diseases, potential food or water contamination, environmental hazards, and other safety concerns.

    • What are some general travel health tips?

      General travel health tips include:

      • Stay up to date on routine vaccinations and any travel-related ones recommended by your doctor based on the destination. These may include typhoid, hepatitis A and B, influenza, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and rabies.

      • Check in with your doctor at least six weeks before travel to ensure you’re up to date on routine vaccines such as the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis and varicella (chickenpox) vaccine.

      • Get information about food safety in your destination country; get familiar with local water safety rules; avoid uncooked food in unsafe areas; buy bottled water that is sealed; wash hands often with soap and water or sanitiser when not possible; do not drink tap water unless it has been boiled or treated.

      • Carry a first aid kit containing medications like antacid tablets, eye drops, bandages, tweezers, disinfectants, etc., along with a thermometer to check body temperature if you feel unwell during travel.

      • Take extra precautions regarding sun protection, such as wearing sunscreen, hats and sunglasses outdoors. Wear light, loose-fitting clothes made of natural fabric that allow air circulation when travelling to hot climates.

      • Be mindful of potential insect bites and stings by using insect repellent on exposed skin, particularly at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

    • Are next-day appointments available?

Yes, you can get next-day appointments at all our branches. Contact our customer care team if you cannot find an available slot.
