About pneumococcal disease

Pneumococcal bacteria can cause severe infections, including pneumonia, meningitis, and septicemia, particularly in older adults and individuals with certain underlying health conditions. Vaccination is the most effective prevention.

While the NHS offers free pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) for those over 65 and at-risk groups, our private service gives you both a choice of vaccine and appointment flexibility.

Who can have the pneumonia vaccine?

At Midway Pharmacy, our service is suitable for adults who:

  • Are aged 18+ (priority booking for 65+)

  • Have chronic conditions (e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease)

  • Smoke or live in communal settings

  • Want broader protection (e.g. PCV13 plus PPV23 sequence)

  • Haven't had a temperature in the 24 hours leading up to the appointment

  • Welder or metal worker

Please note: Some patients may be eligible for a free pneumonia vaccine on the NHS if they are aged 65 and over or under 65 with certain long-term health conditions (e.g. chronic heart, lung, liver or kidney disease; diabetes; immunosuppression). If you think you qualify, please check with your GP practice before booking a private appointment.

Who this service is not suitable for

Unfortunately, the pneumonia vaccination service cannot be offered to anyone who:

  • Is pregnant

  • Is currently unwell with an acute infection

  • Has had a temperature in the 24 hours leading up to their appointment

Offered me a blood pressure check which I happily accepted. Attended on the same day. Asked if it were possible to pay for a flu jab (I’m not eligible yet) and got that at the same time! Excellent!! Very polite and helpful.

Thomas Francos

I booked the ear syringing service at Midway Pharmacy in Morley through the online booking system. Really friendly and professional service from Sharon. I’m really grateful to be able to hear properly again. The treatment only took a few minutes and Sharon is clearly really well trained at what she does. Thank you again.

    • Who is eligible for a free NHS pneumonia vaccine?

You may qualify for a free NHS pneumonia vaccine if you are:

      • 65 or older, or

      • Under 65 with a long-term health condition (e.g. diabetes, COPD, heart or kidney disease).

      • Check with your GP before booking to avoid private fees if you’re already eligible for NHS treatment.

    • Can I book my pneumonia vaccine at the same time as a flu jab?

Yes. You can receive your pneumonia vaccine and flu jab in one appointment.

    • How long does protection from the pneumonia jab last?

Protection from PCV13 typically lasts 5–10 years, while immunity from PPV23 decreases after about 3–5 years. If you remain at high risk, our prescriber may recommend a PPV23 booster after five years.

    • Which pneumonia vaccine do I need: PPV23 or PCV13?

      • PPV23 Pneumonia Vaccine (Pneumococcal Polysaccharide): Covers 23 common strains for broad adult protection.

      • PCV13 Pneumonia Vaccine (Pneumococcal Conjugate): Primes your immune system against 13 key strains and may provide longer-lasting immunity.

      • Our clinical prescriber will advise on the optimal option based on your age, health history and previous vaccinations.

    • What is a pneumonia vaccine, and why should I get it?

A pneumonia vaccine (also known as a pneumococcal vaccine) protects against infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, which can lead to serious illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Vaccination is the best way to reduce your risk, especially if you’re over 65 or have chronic health conditions.
