About blood tests

Blood tests are an essential tool in routine medical screenings and diagnostics. They allow healthcare professionals to evaluate a person's physical well-being by measuring the levels of substances such as electrolytes, proteins, hormones, lipids and enzymes in the blood.

Blood tests can help to detect infections, anaemia, genetic disorders, immune system abnormalities and many other conditions. They are safe and relatively quick procedures that can be used to assess one's health.

What to expect at the appointment

  • The appointment will last roughly 30 minutes

  • We will ask some questions, explain the process, and ensure you are happy before obtaining your consent to proceed

  • Our trained healthcare professional will take a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm, usually the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface

  • Our trained healthcare professional will put a tight band (tourniquet) around your upper arm. This squeezes the arm, temporarily slowing the blood flow and causing the vein to swell. This makes it easier for a sample to be taken

  • A needle attached to a syringe or special container is inserted into the vein. The syringe is used to draw out a sample of your blood

  • You may feel slight pricking or scratching as the needle goes in, but it shouldn't be painful (If you don't like needles and blood, tell the person who is taking the sample so they can make you more comfortable)

  • When the sample has been taken, the tourniquet will be released, and the needle will be removed. Pressure is applied to the skin for a few minutes using a cotton wool pad. A plaster may be put on the small wound to keep it clean

When will I receive my results?

After your appointment, we will send your blood sample to our partner lab on the same day. The lab will analyse the sample, and results will be sent to you via email within 5 to 7 working days from your appointment date.

Your blood type is based on which proteins are on your red blood cells, and this is either type A, B, AB or O. A test is also done to see whether you have Rhesus (Rh) factor on the surface of your red blood cells which is either positive or negative.

This test detects the presence of cardiolipin antibodies produced by the body in response to a perceived threat, and are the most common antiphospholipid antibodies. These autoantibodies can affect the body’s ability to regulate blood clotting.

This test can indicate your risk of developing cardiovascular problems. High cholesterol levels can cause your arteries to become blocked - leading to coronary heart disease, heart attack or stroke.

Finding out about high cholesterol levels can help you make the positive lifestyle and dietary changes needed to improve your chances of a long and healthy life.

Whether vaccinated or caught COVID-19 naturally, this IgG test will confirm whether your immune system has developed neutralising IgG antibodies and gives you a quantitative measure of your body’s response (between levels of 0 - 80,000 AU/ ml).

It will help you know how your immune system responded to vaccination or infection to confirm whether your illness was COVID-19. IgG levels often reduce quickly in the months after an infection. This test will enable you to monitor your IgG levels over time to see if your levels are dropping below the levels that are thought to give immunity.

A high HbA1c is used to diagnose diabetes. It is beneficial because it indicates how often you have had abnormally high blood glucose levels over the previous three months – rather than a glucose test showing your level at a single point in time.

It is a potentially life-saving test, and it is common for people to have diabetes and not know about it. Unmanaged or undiagnosed diabetes is one of the leading causes of mortality.

A Full Blood Count (FBC) provides information about the different cells in the blood, these include the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Red blood cells contain haemoglobin which carries oxygen to the various tissues in the body. In contrast, white blood cells control the immune system and protect the body from foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. FBC testing is a screening test for various disorders like anaemia and infections.

A hepatitis B IgG immunity blood test indicates whether a person is protected against the hepatitis B virus. The test is normally carried out after receiving a course of hepatitis B vaccines.

£65 per patient

The hepatitis B virus produces hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg). The virus causes liver infection and is spread from contact with an infected person's blood and bodily fluids. HBsAg tests are used to diagnose if a person is currently infectious.

£65 per patient

The immune system produces HIV 1&2 antibodies after exposure to HIV. HIV 1&2 antibodies tests are used to measure the presence of antibodies produced in response to HIV.

Levels of the viral p24 protein are present in the blood serum of newly infected individuals during the short period between infection and seroconversion, making p24 antigen assays useful in diagnosing primary HIV infection. For accurate results, this test must be done 3-4 weeks after possible exposure.

After your appointment, we will send your blood sample to our partner lab on the same day. The lab will analyse the sample, and results will be sent to you via email within 5 to 7 working days from your appointment date.

This test checks whether you are pregnant or not. Blood tests can detect pregnancy hormones at lower levels than a urine test, so this test can help you confirm your pregnancy at the earliest possible date.

This test looks for the presence of the pregnancy hormone beta-HCG. It also checks the quantitative levels of this hormone in your blood which can sometimes be used to determine what stage your pregnancy is at.

The immune system produces Syphilis IgM/IgG during and after exposure to syphilis.

IgM antibodies are the first form of response to syphilis and are used to indicate current infection. IgG antibodies produced after exposure to syphilis are used as an indicator of long-term immunity that the body creates.

After your appointment, we will send your blood sample to our partner lab on the same day. The lab will analyse the sample, and results will be sent to you via email within 5 to 7 working days from your appointment date.

This test checks your level of the hormone Testosterone, the primary sex hormone in males. The high levels of testosterone that men have compared to women are responsible for the development of virtually all the physical differences between the sexes.

In adult males, it controls sex drive, maintains muscle mass and helps make sperm. Understanding your testosterone level may help if you are experiencing low sex drive, infertility, erectile dysfunction and more. Testosterone levels should also be checked regularly by anyone using testosterone supplements.

Vitamin D is essential for your health and well-being. It helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, which are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy.

Understanding your vitamin D levels is very important for anyone in the UK. By the end of winter, up to a quarter of the population is low in vitamin D. Low levels can cause a long list of health problems, including fatigue, bone & muscle pain, depression and more.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, email our customer care team or chat with us.

    • Why are blood tests important?

A blood test can reflect your health and reveal hidden diseases and problems. Our partner lab analyses blood samples so you and your doctor can identify health issues and take action.

    • Do blood tests detect cancer?

Some blood tests, such as full blood count and Prostate/ovarian cancer screening tests, can significantly indicate the possibility of cancer.

    • How soon will I get my blood test results?

Samples are analysed within short turnaround times thanks to an experienced team of laboratory scientists and technicians. They’re armed with the latest hi-specification laboratory equipment in London’s newest medical laboratory.

You will receive your results via email within 5-7 working days. Some specialist blood tests may require longer for our laboratory partner to analyse.

    • Do you offer Allergy tests

Yes, we offer allergy tests. You can learn more about this service by visiting our dedicated allergy test page.

    • Does a full blood test check for everything?

Certain blood tests may be more accurate in identifying specific health conditions. However, a routine full blood count is the most comprehensive test that checks for levels of ten components of every major cell in your blood: white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.

A full blood count test includes red blood cell count, haemoglobin, and haematocrit.
