About meningitis B

Meningitis is a severe infection that causes inflammation of the blood vessels that cover the brain and spinal cord. Bacteria or a virus usually causes it, and you can catch it by sneezing, coughing, or kissing someone who has it.

The leading cause of most cases of meningitis in the UK is Meningococcal bacteria, and this can also cause blood poisoning (septicaemia). Five main groups exist, and meningococcal group B (MenB), the most common of these, is responsible for more than 54% of all reported cases.

Meningitis can happen in many different ways and quickly, so it is essential to know the signs and symptoms.

Who can have the meningitis B vaccine?

The MenB vaccine is offered as part of the NHS vaccination schedule to babies at:

  • Eight weeks

  • 16 weeks

  • One year

At Midway Pharmacy, our meningitis B vaccination service is suitable for adults and children aged two and over. Those children and adults who fall outside of the NHS age range may consider having the vaccination privately at Midway Pharmacy.

The Boots MenB vaccination service doesn't replace the need for the free NHS Men ACWY vaccination currently offered to teenagers. However, MenB is not included in this.

Offered me a blood pressure check which I happily accepted. Attended on the same day. Asked if it were possible to pay for a flu jab (I’m not eligible yet) and got that at the same time! Excellent!! Very polite and helpful.

I booked the ear syringing service at Midway Pharmacy in Morley through the online booking system. Really friendly and professional service from Sharon. I’m really grateful to be able to hear properly again. The treatment only took a few minutes and Sharon is clearly really well trained at what she does. Thank you again.

Frequently asked questions

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, email our customer care team or chat with us.

    • Is the meningitis B vaccine safe?

The MenB vaccine can cause side effects like all vaccines, but studies suggest they're generally mild and do not last long.

Almost 8,000 people, including more than 5,000 babies and toddlers, have had the MenB vaccine during clinical trials to test its safety.

Since the vaccine was licensed in 2015, almost 5 million doses have been given to children in the UK.

    • Can MenB vaccine be given at the same time as other vaccines?

The MenB vaccine can be given simultaneously with other routine baby vaccinations, such as the 6-in-1 vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine.

    • What are the side effects of the meningitis B vaccine?

Babies given the MenB vaccine alongside their other routine vaccinations at 8 and 16 weeks are likely to develop a high temperature within 24 hours of vaccination. It is essential to give your baby liquid paracetamol following vaccination to reduce this risk.

Other common side effects of the MenB vaccine include:

      • pain, swelling or redness at the injection site

      • diarrhoea or being sick

      • crying and irritability

The liquid paracetamol will also help with these symptoms.

An allergic reaction is a rare side effect of the MenB vaccine. This may be a rash or itching that affects part or all of the body.

    • How effective is the meningitis B vaccine?

There are hundreds of different strains of meningococcal group B bacteria worldwide. Some tests predict that the MenB vaccine protects against almost 9 in every 10 types of meningococcal group B bacteria circulating in the UK.

However, it needs to be clarified how this will relate to saved lives or cases prevented.

    • How does the meningitis B vaccine work?

The MenB vaccine is made from 3 major proteins found on the surface of most meningococcal bacteria, combined with the outer membrane of 1 MenB strain. Together, they stimulate the immune system to protect against future meningococcal bacteria exposure.

    • What are the symptoms of meningitis B?

Early meningitis symptoms may be similar to the flu. Symptoms may develop over several hours or a few days.

Possible symptoms in anyone older than the age of 2 years include:

      • sudden high fever

      • stiff neck

      • severe headache

      • nausea or vomiting

      • confusion or trouble concentrating

      • seizures

      • sleepiness or difficulty waking

      • sensitivity to light

      • no appetite or thirst

      • skin rash in some cases, such as in meningococcal meningitis
